Sylvain Ciaravolo was born in Strasbourg in 1962. He began his musical studies in his native city, where he discovered the organ when he was eleven. He immediately began to study the instrument on his own and also took an interest in organ building, which is flourishing art in Alsace.
In 1979, after winning a Premier Prix de Virtuosité and a Licence de Concert at the Concours National de Musique de Strasbourg, he decided to concentrate on the organ and joined Michel Chapuis's class at the Conservatoire National de Région in Besançon, where he won a Premier Prix for organ and a Premier Prix d'Excellence in 1982.
In 1985, to celebrate the tricentenary of the birth of J.S.Bach, he performed Bach's entire organ works in twelve recitals held in Strasbourg. This monumental undertaking, at twentytwo, earned him the admiration of the most famous of French organists. In 1987, an invitation to take part in the Festival Estival de Paris gave him the opportunity to play the entire organ works of Dietrich Buxtehude in five recitals at St.Séverin, to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the composer's birth. Presentry titular organist at the church of St-Pierre-le-Vieux in Strasbourg and organ teacher at Pontarlier Consevatoire, Sylvain Ciaravolo performs regularly in concert in France and abroad. He is seen today as one of the most talented members of the younger generation of French organists.
